Friday Estimates: 'Green Hornet' is queen bee; 'The Dilemma' lives up to its name

on Saturday, January 15, 2011

Friday numbers are in, and 2011's first 3D picture, The Green Hornet, easily topped the chart with a strong $11.1 million. Despite months of bad buzz and middling reviews, the Seth Rogen superhero flick has majorly turned its fortunes around in recent weeks, and The Green Hornet should earn about $40 million in its four-day debut—an alright figure for Sony's $120 million production. Ron Howard's latest comedy, The Dilemma, meanwhile, didn't fare nearly as well, though it's not quite the complete disaster that many prognosticators are making it out to be. The film earned $6.1M, and it may find $23M by Monday's end—not that awful, right? A trio of Oscar hopefuls fill out the rest of the top five. True Grit pulled in another $3.2M, while The King's Speech and Black Swan each rode major theatrical expansions to daily grosses of $2.4M. Check out the full daily chart here.
