My Top 5 For The Summer! What Are Your Summer Picks?

on Wednesday, May 19, 2010

The movie world likes to believe that the Summer movie season kicks off on the first week of May, and these days, it seems like Hollywood's trying to push it back to late April! As for me, I think the Summer movie season starts when my Summer actually starts! I guess once I finish school next year, I'll no longer be able to use getting out of school as a marker for the start of my Summer, but for now, I do!  Thus, because my Summer just got started, and because it is List Wednesday, I thought it would be fun to count down my Top 5 movie picks for the Summer (hint: only one of the movies from the above picture made the cut).  If you want to know what to expect over the next three months, check out Yahoo! Movies' super cool Summer Movie Guide right here.  The choices that follow aren't necessarily going to be the highest grossing or most critically praised films, but they're the ones that have captured my attention and that I can't wait to go see.  After reading my list below, let me know your Top 5 movies of the Summer in the comments below!

5. Inception (July 16) - Trailer
It looks mind-bendingly strange and absolutely awesome. I'm not as excited about this movie as the rest of the Christopher Nolan-worshipping online film community, but I like a trippy thriller every now and then.

4. Knight And Day (Jun 25) - Trailer
There's something nice about seeing Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz get back to their roots with a fun action-comedy like this.  It's like they finally remembered that they used to be big movie stars that people liked seeing on the silver screen!  The fantastic trailer has me very excited for Knight And Day because it looks like plain fun!

3. Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time (May 28) - Trailer
I didn't play the game, so I don't know if they're massacring the story, but the CGI-filled spectacle looks equal parts cheesy and awesome.  I'm not one of those pretentious film buffs who always needs thought-provoking, edgy fare.  Like the above film, Prince Of Persia looks like a whole lotta fun, and that's what Summer movies should be about!

2. Toy Story 3 (June 18) - Trailer
Like I always say, until Pixar gives me a reason to doubt them, I won't.  Their films are always wonderful, and I'm sure this will be no exception.

1. Salt (July 23) - Trailer
I don't know why, but this movie intrigues me so much. The ambiguously evil secret agent role seems tailor-made for Angelina Jolie, and the suspenseful trailer had me excited and confused. I hope it loves up to the hype I've created for it in my mind!

I'm looking forward to Inception, Knight and Day and actually Salt. But not in a 'must-see' way to be honest.

I cannot get remotely excited about Prince of Persia. It looks absolutely awful from the trailers and I expect I shall stay well away from it.

Apart from that, I have to say there was never much coming out this summer that really had me getting excited and anticipating release.

I just don't feel there's a really strong line up this summer.

Kevin, Prince of Persia will be sweet! :D I know it probably won't be that good of a movie, but sometimes, you just gotta let go and smile at the campy ridiculousness!

Hey, someone agrees with me about Salt! I have been waiting five years to see Angelina Jolie in a decent action movie, so this is a must see for me.

I was skeptical about Prince Of Persia, but I read a good review of it, and now I want to see it. And the studio is apparantly very happy with it which is a good sign.

Unfortunately, Inception looks like it's going to be a souped up crime drama featuring criminal activity. I never support those movies.

I can't remember what Cameron Diaz has done to make me dislike her, but I do. Sorry. On the other hand, Tom Cruise movies are almost always a good time, so someone else will have to want to see this with me to make it happen.

I am very sorry but Prince Of Persia looks TERRIBLE. absolutely terrible (GI Joe level bad).

Other than that, solid list.

Mine was (before May):
1) Last Airbender (HUGE fan of the series, and even bigger fan of M.Night)
2) Inception (OMGOMGOMG NOLAN)
3) Iron Man 2 (yeah yeah it wasn't great, I was still excited for it)
4) Toy Story 3 (no explanation needed)
5) Knight & Day or MacGruber. (tom cruise is just great, and I love SNL)

also Kevin, you're totally right. Summer lineup looks very weak.

Last year we had heavy hitters Transformers 2, Wolverine, Star Trek, Harry Potter as well as critical darlings District 9, Inglourious Basterds, Up.
This year all I really see is Inception, Toy Story 3 and Iron Man 2 (which some argue failed commercially).

Happy to see Inception on lots of lists.

My list is:
1)Inception
2)Toy Story 3
3)Shrek
4)The Karate Kid
5)Knight & Day or maybe Robin Hood (depending on its word-of-mouth or if it's too violent & not like Gladiator)

Prince of Persia has a lot of potential either way. I'm thinking positively: it's gonna be a fun ride. It won't be Oscar bait, obviously, but it could be a Pirates of the Caribbean type of film. Clever action, witty one liners, simple plot- I dig it.
