Box Office Bits (March Recap)

on Thursday, March 18, 2010

Today, I'm going to launch a new column called Box Office Bits.  I'm not sure if it will appear on any sort of regular schedule yet, but if you like it and want to see more of it, I can certainly make it happen.  Box Office Bits will be a way of me talking about all the little details at the box office that aren't important enough to garner a mention in my weekend videos.  You know, stuff like box office milestones, under-the-radar sleeper hits, limited releases, and super-nerdy box office facts and statistics that only a box office geek like me would notice.  Each item will be presented Twitter style, in 140 characters or less! (By the way, follow @BoxOfficeJunkie) This time around, I'm going to cover the two weeks of the box office I missed.  Be sure to let me know what you think in the comments! Here goes:

-WOW. Alice In Wonderland is a monster! $116.1M in its opening weekend, and then $62M in its second?! $300M is a sure thing.

-College students love Shutter Island. I haven't heard anyone speak a bad word about it. That's probably why it's earned $108 million so far!

-Brooklyn's Finest can join Edge Of Darkness and From Paris With Love as movies-with-old-actors-playing-cops-that-nobody-cares-about.

-But in terms of box office appeal Mel Gibson > Richard Gere > John Travolta.

-Go Tooth Fairy! It's earned $57 million after eight weeks on the chart and a wretched opening weekend of $14 million.

-Percy Jackson has $82 million in the US and $200M worldwide against a $95 million budget.  Does it deserve a sequel?

-The Green Zone. Really, Universal? $100 million spent on a movie about the Iraq War?  REALLY?! That seemed like a good idea?!

-The Blind Side finally crossed $250 million!  Unfortunately, this happened because Sandra Bullock won Best Actress.  (sigh)

-She's Out Of My League should just earn back it's $20 million budget in theaters, but it will have a long life on TV and DVD.

-Also, She's Out Of My League looks like something my Dad would love. We'll never see eye-to-eye about what makes a movie funny.

-Remember Me? Sadly, I will not. Though, I'm glad Claire did something useful with her time while away from Lost, which is great this season!

-Our Family Wedding was lucky to earn $7.6 million on opening weekend.  It looks like a movie made for the Hallmark Channel.

-Avatar has earned $730M in the US and $2.64B worldwide. And my roommate wonders why he can't find anyone who hasn't seen it already...

-Cop Out ($39M) and The Crazies ($33M) are like boring American Idol contestants. I usually only remember the really great or awful ones.

-I completely forgot about The Wolfman, and I bet Universal wishes it could. It's made $61M against a $150 million budget.

-Crazy Heart quietly strummed and drank its way to $34 million over the past few weeks.

-The Squeakquel ($218M) just surpassed the original Alvin And The Chipmunks ($217M) at the box office. At least the franchise isn't growing.

Alice - yep $300 million is indeed a sure thing. I guess studios really have realised how they can inflate the box office take of a film by using 3D. It's not going away!!

The Wolfman - I have to say I enjoyed it. If only Universal had spent less it could have been a minor hit for them.

Percy Jackson - probably doesn't deserve a sequel but might yet get one, if they keep the costs relatively low.

I also really enjoyed Shutter Island - glad it's proved popular as well.

Sandra Bullock - so, with the recent rumours about her hubby, is the 'Oscar Curse' actually true and kicking in double quick? Did it Blind Side her as well?

(ok - sorry, but just had to use that last line!)

Incorrectomundo about The Sqeakquel. The first one only made $144 million overseas, but The Squeakquel has made $219 million overseas. That's solid growth.
