What film had the most impressive box office run of 2010?

on Monday, January 10, 2011

We all know that 2010 wasn't the best year at the box office. Attendance was way down, the summer was a bummer, and 3D bothered pretty much everyone—especially me. Still, there were a number of movies that did, in fact, carve out some very strong box office returns last year. Toy Story 3 was the overall champ with a huge $415 million, though it was heavily aided by expensive 3D ticket prices. That was also the case with Alice in Wonderland, which surprised everyone by grossing a potent $336 million domestically, and over $1 billion worldwide. Other 3D success stories include Despicable Me ($251M), How To Train Your Dragon ($217.6M), and Jackass 3D ($117M).

Not all blockbusters were shot in 3D, though. Many did just fine in good old-fashioned 2D. Iron Man 2 ($312M) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 ($280M so far) posted strong, if slightly underwhelming, results, while Inception ($292.5M), The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ($300.5M), and The Karate Kid ($176M) exceeded expectations on their way to box office domination.

But what movie do you think had the most impressive box office run in 2010? Was Toy Story 3's sheer drawing power more notable than Inception's ability to draw audiences into a complex psychological thriller? Was How to Train Your Dragon's leggy March run a more memorable feat than The Twilight Saga: Eclipse exhibiting franchise resilience? Sound off in the poll below, and then leave your elaborated thoughts in the comments!

How To Train Your Dragon because I thought this would underperform base on the 1st weekend but it went to become a massive success

Despicable Me was the most impressive for me, when the trailers for that and Megamind came out I was sure DM would be the smaller of the two. It's had some pretty good legs too. How To Train Your Dragon also had a much stronger run than I thought it would.

The Karate Kid, I think that one surprised a lot of people. I remember reading how that film, was expected to flop. Next could we have a poll asking what was the biggest disappointment?

And Harry Potter is catching up. It hung on well these last weeks and has made $288 million total. I think it could surpass Inception's domestic gross.

i think the big surprise was inception because it didnt rely on 3d, it was a completely original thought, and it had dicaprio in it... (i think of him as his role in growing pains) (and i'm only slightly teasing on that last bit).
but for something so original, i'm glad and surprised it did well
